Dr. Strand started this program in 1997 in his office. At that point he was learning a lot about insulin resistance, then it was called syndrome X. After recognizing how important insulin resistance was to the general health, Dr. Strand spent three and a half years in the medical literature studying about the metabolic syndrome and trying to find ways to reverse it in order to help his patients. What Dr. Strand learned was that you don’t just wake up and have diabetes. It takes years and years of poor lifestyles and this offers us a great opportunity to intervene, recommend, and promote lifestyle changes that improve insulin sensitivity. Dr. Strand learned very quickly that since it was a poor lifestyle that was getting us in to this trouble and about 50% of the population has diabetes, or pre-diabetes that’s intimately related to the obesity epidemic. Insulin resistance not only leads to diabetes but to obesity. This is the major healthy risk that we have. Since it was poor lifestyles that got us in to this problem we found that maybe it was healthy lifestyles that could get us out. Dr. Strand came up with a try at healthy lifestyles that improve insulin sensitivity from a different mechanism.
We learned that eating a healthy diet that does not spike your blood sugar, getting in those good low glycemic carbohydrates, good fats, and good proteins that you could improve insulin sensitivity. The medical community was telling their patients the wrong diets. The medical community was promoting: breads, cereals, grains, rice, pasta, potato, as the base of the food pyramid. It turns out that processed carbohydrates, majority in the white potato actually are worse than sugars which is @ the peak of the FDA Food Pyramid. What Dr. Strand found is the fact that the medical Industry pretty much caused the obesity diabetic epidemic, which is what we are dealing with. When you spike your blood sugar, you not only create internal damage, but it also leads to Carbohydrate addiction and that can lead to significant problems, as far as, over-eating and unusual cravings which is a natural physiological response which you’ve been calling emotional eating and cravings all of these years plus its related response to a natural physiological response to spiking your blood sugar.
Another thing happens after you abuse your insulin for years. It might take 5, 10, or 15 years before you can tip over into this abnormal metabolic state called the metabolic syndrome and it has a lot of classic problems that occur. For example Blood Pressure goes up, triglycerides, you know the fat in the blood, goes up, cholesterol goes up, HDL (good cholesterol) goes down, you start to have central weight gain, you can have sleep apnea, you can have polycystic ovarian disease, all of these things are relate to insulin resistance and eventually it makes you very vulnerable to becoming diabetic over time.
What Dr. Strand learned early on was that eating a healthy diet improves insulin sensitivity, aerobic activity (getting the body to move) like walking briskly, swimming, biking, hiking, etc. improves insulin sensitivity from a different mechanism, but then nutritional supplementation where you take chromium, vanadium, magnesium, selenium, calcium, vitamin E, vitamin, C in supplementation. There are many studies out there that show that nutritional supplementation improves insulin sensitivity from a different mechanism. What Dr. Strand learned very early from his medical practice is that if he could get his patients to make one of these lifestyle changes he saw some improvement. If he could get them to make 2 of the 3 changes there was a little bit more of a change. But if he could get them to do all three the results were simply phenomenal and we could actually reverse this pre-diabetes. He now has documented in his medical practice over 50 diabetic patients that are not only well controlled but have also totally reversed their diabetes.
No matter if you are a type 1, type2, insulin dependent diabetic, it does not matter, these principles will help you improve diabetic control and decrease your risk of secondary complications. Now if they left any of the lifestyles out, his patients did not improve much. They were able to receive some results but they were unable to see anyone reversing anything if they didn’t do all three. Once Dr. Strand realized all of this, he started bring in an nutritionalist and teaching his patients what a healthy lifestyle was and he would check back on them in 12 weeks at his office. His results were disappointing and after doing this for about a year and a half, he just sort of gave up because it wasn’t working and they weren’t getting vast results. Dr. Strand had two nurse practitioners. They decided to bring the patients in weekly into the office for office visits and they would have them write down everything, the 4th pillar which is journaling. This became the Trinity program and what they found is they would have the people come in and they saw their behavior change. What they realized is when they saw people write down how they eat, exercise, and supplement they could review it. They found that these people could change these unconscious lifestyles and make them CONCIOUS and they had phenomenal results.
This lead to Dr. Strands 3 clinical trials with 25 participants who had one pre-existing problem, they couldn’t lose weight. They had to have failed 4 or 5 diets before they were accepted in to the program. In 12 weeks doing Phase 1 for 1 month, phase 2 for the last 2 months, they had an average weight loss of 15lbs. Waist size dropped 2.5 inches, Blood Pressure dropped, and he saw a drop in cholesterol and triglycerides. This was a pilot study. This led to the 1st clinical trial and he had tremendous result after 12 weeks BMI drop of 2.2 points. Triglycerides drop of 27%. He found that cholesterol dropped 17%, Blood sugars and insulin levels drop to about 45% and that is traumatic.
